The 7th birthday invitation, and why it is a bigger deal here

A 7th birthday invitation in the Philippines has a harder job than most people give it credit for. The guest list is children, the readers are their parents, and the two want completely different information. One wants to know if there is a magician; the other wants to know about parking, pick-up time and whether they are expected to stay.

Why the seventh is the one that gets a party

Convention, mostly, and a good one. The first and the seventh are the two childhood birthdays Filipino families tend to mark properly, the seventh being the last before a child is old enough to be embarrassed by it. Practically it means a bigger guest list, a programme and often a theme with real money behind it.

That is worth knowing because it changes what the invitation is for. A fourth birthday invitation tells six families where to be. A seventh often carries a programme, a theme, a dress code for the children and a separate arrangement for the adults, which is closer to a small wedding than to a playdate.

The other reason it matters is the photographs. It is the last birthday where the child is entirely a child, and it is the one families go back to.

What parents need that the invitation usually omits

Five things: the end time, whether they should stay, whether siblings are welcome, what food there is for adults, and how the pick-up works. Every one of those is asked in the group chat within a day of the invitation going out, which means the invitation could have answered it.

The end time, not just the start
Parents plan the whole afternoon around it, including the drive home and whoever else needs collecting.
Drop-off or stay
Say it outright. A parent who is not sure will stay, and then you are catering for forty adults you did not count.
Siblings
If the invited child has a younger brother, somebody has to decide whether he comes. Better you than the parent guessing.
Food for the adults
If the adults are staying, they are eating. Saying there is a separate table for the titos and titas settles it.
Pick-up arrangements
Where to wait, whether there is parking, and whether a yaya or a driver can collect on a parent's behalf.

The drop-off line is the important one

It is the single most useful sentence on a children's party invitation and the one most often left off. Parents are staying is a headcount decision worth thousands of pesos, and it should not be discovered on the day.

What the children need

Almost nothing in writing, and one thing in pictures. Children do not read invitations; they are shown them. So the cover carries the theme, and anything they need to do, like coming as a pirate or bringing swimming things, has to be impossible for a parent to miss.

  • The theme, visible on the cover rather than described in a paragraph
  • Any costume or dress-up instruction, stated once and clearly
  • Anything to bring: swimming things, a towel, socks for a play place
  • Whether there are games with prizes, because children ask this first

A theme is worth committing to properly. A seven-year-old who was promised a safari expedition and got balloons will notice, and it is one of the very few audiences that is completely honest about disappointment.

How to word a 7th birthday invitation

In the child's voice for the cover and the parents' voice for the details. You are invited to my 7th birthday reads better on a children's party than any formal construction, and the practical information underneath can be as plain as a school notice without spoiling it.

The cover
Mateo turns seven. An expedition, and you are on the crew. Short enough for a child to be read it once and remember.
The invite line
Together with his parents, Mateo invites you to his 7th birthday party.
The practical block
Saturday, three until six. Parents are very welcome to stay, and there is a table for the titos and titas.
The reply line
Kindly let us know by the tenth, and tell us how many are coming so we can hold your seats.

Would you rather hand it over?

We design the invitation, host it on one private link and gather the replies, the messages and every photo your guests take. From ₱999, with your first draft in three to five days.

What it costs, and when to send it

Three to four weeks ahead is right for a children's party, and two is workable. A done-for-you invitation here runs from a few hundred pesos for an image to a few thousand for a page with replies on it. Ours is ₱999 for a kids' birthday, whatever the theme.

Send it to the parents rather than to a class group chat if you can. A children's party invitation in a group of thirty parents produces almost no replies, because every parent assumes the others are handling the coordination.

Three weeks is the sweet spot. Earlier and it gets forgotten by families whose weekends fill up two weeks out; later and you are competing with plans that already exist.

Asked about this

Why is the 7th birthday special in the Philippines?

It is one of the two childhood birthdays Filipino families traditionally celebrate properly, along with the first. It is the last one before a child is old enough to find the whole thing embarrassing, which is why it usually gets a programme and a theme.

What should a 7th birthday invitation include?

The theme on the cover, the start and end time, the venue with parking notes, whether parents are staying, whether siblings are invited, anything to bring, and a reply that asks how many are coming rather than just whether.

Should I say whether parents can stay?

Always. It is the most useful sentence on a children's party invitation. A parent who is unsure will stay, and forty unplanned adults is a catering problem you would much rather know about three weeks in advance.

How far ahead should I send a kids' party invitation?

About three weeks. Earlier and it slips out of mind before the weekend gets close; later and you are competing with plans families have already made. Send to individual parents rather than a class group chat if you want replies.

Tell us about the day

Send the occasion, the date and a rough headcount. It takes about two minutes, and nothing is due until we have spoken. We come back the same day with a time to talk it through, and then we start drawing.
